First two months at Immediate Media

From now on in I will be updating the blog every month or so with things that I have been doing in my workplace at Immediate Media, but for my first post I will re-cap what I've been doing so far in my first two months.

A typical week in the first few months consisted of a mix of designing advertisement banners and takeovers for the web team and processing and uploading BBC magazine apps to test on the iPad.

With designing advertisements for web I use Photoshop where I can add in simple animations if needed. At first I was given the briefs for these banners/takeovers from the web team, but after a few weeks I started to get contacted via email from people that I had already designed them for asking if I could do other designs as they were impressed by the first few that I had done for them.

With the app processing and uploading of the apps it consisted of using InDesign files and using a automated converter which a scripter from outside the company had set up which converts the InDesign files into PDF's where they are tagged with the correct hyperlinks and buttons, the PDF is then placed back into an InDesign document and then I have to upload it to a programme called pressrun which will allows anyone with an account in the company to download it onto their iPad and test it for any kind of bugs.

We met quite a few problems with the apps we were testing and at the moment we are still ironing out all of the problems, such as speed, quality of the images and the tagging of the hyperlinks and buttons, but it's relatively close to being a finished product.

Recently though, me and a few of the team on my floor sat down to discuss more of a structured week plan where from Mon-tues I will be working with the app team, where hopefully I will be able to design a few things and maybe learn how to use HTML5 to maybe use to make widgets for apps, however, it is hard to learn quickly from scratch and it will depend on people having time to teach me and whether there is need for it. Wednesdays I will usually be at the college training courses and project work. Then from Thurs-Fri I will be working with the web team, who have given me 3 weekly online newsletters to do which will hopefully help me learn a bit of HTML coding and will give me more responsibility. As well doing the newsletters I will be designing elements of websites and other web stuff.
